Derrick B. Yates is an experienced trial attorney who has devoted his legal career to serving the people of Southwest Virginia. Having spent many years both prosecuting and defending criminal cases, Derrick brings a unique perspective to every client he represents. His extensive courtroom experience, practical judgment, and commitment to justice allow him to effectively advocate for individuals facing difficult legal challenges.
Derrick earned his Juris Doctor from the Appalachian School of Law in 2009 after graduating from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He has been licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 2012.
Before joining The Reliance Law Group, Derrick served as the Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Dickenson County, where he prosecuted a wide range of criminal offenses, handled complex felony matters, argued cases before juries, and worked closely with law enforcement agencies, victims, and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process. This experience gave him an in-depth understanding of how criminal cases are investigated, charged, negotiated, and tried.
Prior to his service as a prosecutor, Derrick maintained a successful private law practice representing clients in criminal defense and general civil matters. He also served as Attorney for the Town of Haysi and was the defense bar representative for the Dickenson County Recovery Court. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for professionalism, thorough preparation, and strong courtroom advocacy.
Derrick has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the legal profession and his community. He served as President of the Dickenson County Bar Association for many years and has worked with attorneys, judges, and public officials throughout Southwest Virginia.
